The “case” for Amp Road Cases

The say a picture is worth a thousand words so take a look at these!

A vintage Vox AC30 from the 60’s you say, cool!
Well you’re kinda right, it is a Vox AC30, but it’s a reissue
from, believe it or not, 2004!

I’ve been caring for this amp since it was new, and despite its road
worn looks, it works just fine and sounds great. A credit to its
roadworthiness.

The amp belongs to a local, New Jersey based, national act, and has seen
its share of shows, and thousands of miles over the past 4 years.
AND, once again, believe it or not, it started out life living in a road case!

Fortunately for the band, but not for the amp, as the venues have gotten larger,
the need to carry a full PA and crew has gone away.
The truck that was once needed to haul all the gear for a five piece band and
sound system, has now become a passenger van with limited
space for road cases.

So, if you want to protect your investment, my advice is, buy a road case
and use it!

Power Adapters

Now that you understand a little bit about current, let’s talk power adapters.  It’s not unusual for these little “wall warts” thingies to go bad. Sometimes the wires break internally just from being wrapped up after the gig, or maybe your dog chewed thru them, or maybe some good looking drunken woman who just happened to be dancing on stage during that last set stumbled over you pedal board and broke the connector. Who knows! But you need one and you need one right away ‘cause you have a gig tomorrow night and you can’t get one from the manufacturer that quickly.

Well my friends, if there’s a Radio Shack near you, you may be in luck! But there are a few things you have to know before hand.  Once again we’re dealing with current and voltage.

All about Fuses

To me being in the musical electronic repair business is a lot of fun!  I get to meet a lot of interesting and talented people, musicians mostly, both young and starting out and well, lets just say seasoned and more experienced.  Music keeps you young!

Seemingly not a week goes by that I don’t either receive a phone call or a visit from a client with questions regarding fuses or power adapters. I’ve decided to attempt to address the most common of those issues in this short document.

blownamp1.jpgblownamp1.jpgWhat is a fuse anyway? Essentially, it’s a piece of wire designed to burn out when the current flowing thru it exceeds its rated value.  I know you may have heard it before, but it’s worth repeating that electrical current is like water flowing thru a pipe. Too much pressure and the pipe bursts! Too much current and the fuse blows! Seems simple, right?  But you also have to understand that a fuse is primarily a safety device, designed to protect the circuitry “down stream” from it! Fuses blow for a reason, and most of the time that reason is because its current rating is being exceeded due to a short somewhere in the circuitry.
